Starting young
At the age of ten, I was forced to go work with my dad and brother in the scorching heat. My family and I would would pick fruits almost all year round, we picked olives, oranges, peaches, and apricots. Working with my family was not easy. I had the same responsibilities that a grown man had, except I didn't have to support a whole family. Although I was only ten my father still made me work like everyone else and he did not expect anything else, I would climb up and down a 9 foot ladder multiple times a day. The hardest obstacle that I came across was carrying and dumping the forty pound buckets of fruits, my arms which resembled dry spaghetti felt like they were going to break every time that I would carry the buckets. Going to work was dreadful, I didn't actually start enjoying going to work until my father actually started paying me, for the first year and a half i was working for my dad for a very little pay because I did not work much and only worked in the summer.
At first my father only wanted me to work with him during the summer, but once he saw that I was keeping up with other workers he wanted to take me on the weekends during school weeks as well. My father was careless when it came to school he would rather have me going to work with him instead of doing homework when I had the time. At this point I realized that I had to disassociate myself with work if I wanted to succeed in school, but doing this was impossible because my father believed that school at this time was easy and that I can easily manage both work and school, he had a point but I knew if I gave school my complete attention I could be twice as productive and possibly be a much better student.
Although my father had me doing both work and school, he later found out the importance of school and he wanted me to be successful in life but his actions were quite contradicting. Once I got into highschool, thats when I realized that I needed to focus more on school then work because classes got harder and deadlines got more stern.
It wasn't until my junior year when I realized that just having school and not working was a little bit too easy and I would find myself slacking off most of the times either ways, I thought that If I had more time for school I would do better in school, and this was the case but for only when I needed to do something major, like a book report, presentation, or projects. I also learned that my father not only taught me how to work in rough conditions, he also taught me how to be a man with integrity, and one of the most important ones he taught me how to manage time, having all these characteristics made me the person I am today.
